This figure compares the simulated, predicted, and observed
sea-surface temperatures from 1970 to 1990. Oceanographers at Texas A&M
created a computer model that simulates the interaction between the ocean
and the atmosphere in the tropical Atlantic. Using climate conditions beginning
in the mid-1960s, the model predicts the sea-surface temperature for each
year. Then, scientists compare the computer's prediction with the observed
SSTs through the '70s, '80s, and '90s.
