Size range of coccolithophore cells

Some coccolithophores are tinier than others. In this scanning electron micrograph one of the largest species, Coronosphaera maxima (about 40 micrometers in diameter), dwarfs the smaller specimen lying next to it. Zooming in for a closer look clarifies one of the smallest coccolithophore species, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii (only about three micrometers in diameter).
