Some coccolithophores are tinier than others. In this scanning
electron micrograph one of the largest species, Coronosphaera maxima
(about 40 micrometers in diameter), dwarfs the smaller specimen lying next
to it. Zooming in for a closer look clarifies one of the smallest coccolithophore
species, Gephyrocapsa ericsonii (only about three micrometers
in diameter).
