In this scanning electron micrograph the spheroid cell of the coccolithophore Michaelsarsia elegans rests on its skeleton-like appendages radiating from an opening on the side of the cell facing away from the camera. The appendages have three parts, but only two are shown here. Two or more appendages attach to M. elegans' doughnut-shaped coccoliths. Two of these are clearly visible below the cell in this photograph, but one has lost its appendages.
