Oil reserves in the Caspian Sea could rival those in the Gulf of Mexico. Amoco Corporation, British Petroleum, Pennzoil, Unocal, Lukoil, and the Azeri state oil company have formed a joint venture with several smaller companies to exploit deep deposits there. Offshore production is cleaner than techniques used in the past and will bring needed cash to Azerbaijan.
