Variations in the concentration of thorium isotope, 230Th, in the water column result from the decay of uranium isotope, 234U. Graduate student Laodong Guo hopes that analyses of thorium isotopes will allow him to examine the reactivity of colloidal organic carbon in more detail than is possible using carbon isotopes.
