Quarterdeck 2.1
By Rahilla Abbas and Gilbert T. Rowe
During the summer of 1994 the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University will offer a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) that allows college students to pursue an oceanography research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Through the REU Texas A&M joins the National Science Foundation (NSF), sponsor of the program, and colleges and universities around the nation in an effort to recruit undergraduates into oceanography and related fields. The Department of Oceanography hopes the REU will allow promising students an opportunity to explore oceanography as a rewarding and challenging career option. Male and female students of all ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as the program is designed to serve any student whose interest in oceanography extends beyond the classroom.
The students selected will work full time for ten weeks in the summer at the College Station or Galveston campuses. Ship time aboard the R/V Gyre or smaller coastal vessels will allow students to collect data in the field. The program has space for twelve undergraduates who will be selected from an applicant pool of college juniors and seniors majoring in engineering, the natural sciences or mathematics. Freshmen, sophomores, and liberal arts majors can also apply if warranted by their background in science. Admission will be competetive and, in addition to a stipend of $2,500, those accepted into the program will have an allowance for tuition, travel, and room and board. They can also also earn four hours of college credit toward their undergraduate degrees.
The REU adds to the growing opportunities for undergraduates in the Department of Oceanography. The Oceanography Program of Study (see below) allows a more focused oceanography curriculum for students already at TAMU, while the REU reaches out to those at other Texas colleges and universities and around the country. These programs contribute to the continuing effort to diversify and strengthen oceanography as a scientific discipline.
